Coating Suspension Preparation

Flora Coat systems are very easy to prepare. Add the Flora Coat powder in solvent/water as described below and mix for 45 minutes with propeller stirrer.

Equipment:
  • S.S. Vessel with a capacity of 25% more than total suspension being prepared. The height of the vessel should be around 1.25times than its diameter.
  • A variable speed propeller stirrer with blade diameter of nearly 1/3 of the diameter of S.S. Vessel as described above.

Procedure for Mixing:
1. Aqueous system:
  • Weigh the required quantity of Flora C oat.
  • Take required quantity of water in vessel.
  • Stir with propeller stirrer to form vortex. Add quantity of Flora Coat in vortex, stir for 5 min.
  • Reduce the speed of stirrer and continue for 40 minutes.
  • Pass the solution through 150micron opening sieve & use for coating.
2. Solvent/ Non Aqueous system:
  • Weight the required quantity of Flora Coat.
  • Take required quantity of IPAC in vessel.
  • Stir with propeller stirrer to form vortex. Add quantity of Flora Coat in vortex, stir for 5 min.
  • Add quantity of Methylene Dichloride and continue for 40 minutes.
  • Pass the solution through 150micron opening sieve & use for coating.
Precautions:
  • The usage of high speed stirrer or homogenizer is not recommended.
  • The suspension should not be passed through colloidal mill for Flora Coat E Aq.
  • The suspension may need gentle stirring during the coating operation to maintain its homogeneous property during spray.
  • The suspension thus prepared should be used within 24 hours to avoid any microbial contamination.

Trouble Shooting

Excessive Drying Time:
  • Check Dilution
  • Check drying air temperature (optimum Temp. 500-600C.)
  • Check spray rate. Reduce spray rate if necessary
  • Check automizing air pressure. If automizing air pressure is less than 80 psi, larger drops are formed resulting in increased drying time and surface roughness.
Excessive Flying of coating material:
  • Check side air flow. Excessive side air flow will cause premature drying of spray, resulting in flying of coating material particles.
  • Check distance of spray gun from tablet bed surface. Take gun slightly closer to the tablet bed.
  • Check drying air temperature. Higher drying air temperature will cause premature drying of spray causing deposition of particles on the tablet surface.
  • Check side air flow. If side air flow is high then there is a chance of coating material drying up before reaching tablet surface. The dried particles can cause roughness on tablet by sticking to its surface.
  • High viscous solution can also give rough surface by creating hindrance in proper spraying. Check dilution.
Roughness on tablet surface:
  • Check friability of core tablets.
  • Check distance of surface gun from tablet bed surface. Do not keep the gun very close to the bed surface or very far away from it. A distance of 9”- 12” will be ideal.
  • Check drying air temp at optimum level mentioned above.
  • Increase spray rate if necessary. Excessive fine spray can also cause premature drying of spray.
  • Check atomizing air pressure. Very high atomization can result in premature drying.
Development of white patches during coating (sticking between tablets):
  • Check spray rate. Reduce spray rate is necessary
  • Check whether coating pan surface has got excessive coating solution on it. If excessive coating solution is present on pan surface then this film gets wet causing sticking of tablets to the pan surface. On drying, the material peels off from tablet surface resulting in white patches. In such cases, clear pan surface and then continue coating.
  • Check side air flow and dilution.
  • Ensure good rolling of tablets in the pan. Improper rolling or sliding of tablets in the pan can cause excessive rubbing of tablets at the bottom of the bed and also excessive wetting of tablets on the top. This can also cause development of patches.
Uneven distribution of colour from tablet to tablet:
  • This is due to inefficient rolling of the tablets in the pan. To get uniform distributions of colour ensure good rolling of tablets in the pan. Use additional baffle if necessary.
  • Spreading of the solution spray by opening the side air flow will aid in improving.
